The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) is a public university created in 1978, and is the only Higher Education institution in the Balearic archipelago, one of the most important international tourism destinations in the Mediterranean, receiving more than 13 million tourists yearly. Recognizing the central importance of the tourist activity, the UIB pays special attention to training, knowledge and research in tourism, leading research in this field in Spain.

NAME: GABRIEL JORDÀ

CV ABSTRACT:

Gabriel Jordà, PhD. is a Ramon y Cajal researcher at the Physics department of the UIB and at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, UIB-CSIC). He obtained a degree in Physics by the University of the Balearic Islands and did a PhD in Marine Sciences at the Polytechnical University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain) and the Laboratoire d’Etudes Geophysiques (Toulouse, France). His work is mainly focused on the characterization and analysis of marine climate variability and the impacts of climate variability on marine ecosystems and coastal infastructures. He has published more than 60 papers in peer reviewed journals as Nature Climate Change, Scientific Reports, Journal of Geophysical Research and Climate Dynamics. He has participated in European (16) and Spanish (16) projects being the principal investigator in 6 of them. He has also received awards by the World Climate Research Programme and the MedCLIVAR Programme for his contributions to Mediterranean Sea Level research.

NAME: NURIA MARBÀ

CV ABSTRACT:

Núria Marbà, PhD. is a Scientific Researcher of CSIC at the Instituto Mediterráneo de Estudios Avanzados (UIB-CSIC) and the Head of the Department of Global Change Research of IMEDEA. She is interested to know (1) the function of and services provided by macrophyte dominated marine ecosystems, (2) the coastal ecosystem responses to pressures and to the release of pressures, paying particular attention to no linear responses, and (3) to provide scientific basis to define marine ecosystem conservation polices. She has participated European (17) and Spanish (17) research projects in the fields of marine ecology, biodiversity and conservation encompassing temperate (Mediterranean, NE Atlantic Ocean, Western Australia), tropical (Indian and Pacific Oceans, Caribbean), and, recently, polar (Arctic and Subarctic) coastal areas. She has published 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals (including Nature, Science, PNAS, Nature Climate Change, Nature Geoscience) and is associate editor of the journals Limnology and Oceanography, Marine Ecology: an evolutionary perspective as well as Frontiers in Global Change and the Future Ocean.

NAME: IRIS ELINE HENDRIKS

CV ABSTRACT:

Iris Hendriks (PhD) is a “Ramón y Cajal” research fellow at the University of the Balearic Islands at IMEDEA (Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies), Mallorca. She participated in over 20 national and international projects, between which several European FP6 and FP7 projects, with management experience in the FP6 Network of Excellence MarBEF. The main focus of her post-doctorate research has been on seagrass meadows, through their interaction with hydrodynamics; evaluating particle retention and wave attenuation as well as fragmentation and habitat connectivity on bigger scales. She also examined the chemical ecosystem-engineering role of vegetation through modification of the carbonate system by primary production and possible facilitation of calcification for associated fauna under future scenarios of ocean acidification. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed papers, including in Nature Climate Change and Science and is associated editor of the journals Frontiers in Global Change and the Future Ocean y Limnology&Oceanography:Letters. She contributed with over 35 talks at international congresses and chaired 2 sessions at ASLO. She is teaching in Master courses and has directed more than 6 Master theses and 3 PhD theses.
