Fondazione Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (Fondazione CMCC)

Department carrying out activities: CSP (Climate Simulations and Previsions)

The Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici (Fondazione CMCC) is a non-profit research institution (, established with the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Ministry of the Environment Land and Sea, the Ministry for Agricultural and Forestry Policies and the Ministry of Finance.

The mission of Fondazione CMCC is to investigate and model our climate system and its interactions with society to provide reliable, rigorous, and timely scientific results, which will in turn stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop science driven adaptation and mitigation policies in a changing climate. Fondazione CMCC collaborates with experienced scientists, economists, and technicians, which work together in order to provide full analyses of climate impacts on various systems such as agriculture, ecosystems, coasts, water resources, health, and economics. Fondazione CMCC also supports policymakers in setting and assessing costs, mitigation, and adaptation policies.

Fondazione CMCC research activities are distributed among eight research divisions that share different knowledge and skills in the field of climate science: the Advanced Scientific Computing (ASC) Division, the Climate Simulation and Prediction (CSP) Division, the Economic analysis of Climate Impacts and Policy (ECIP) the Division, Impacts on Agriculture, Forests and Ecosystem Services (IAFES) Division, the Ocean modeling and Data Assimilation (ODA) Division, the Ocean Predictions and Applications (OPA) Division, the Risk Assessment and Adaptation Strategies (RAAS) Division, the REgional Models and geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) Division.

Fondazione CMCC acquired portfolio of research projects includes 205 funded projects: 2 funded projects in FP6, 35 funded projects in FP7, 24 funded projects in H2020 and 144 funded projects under other EU and international research grants. In about a half of the implemented projects, CMCC acted as the coordinator.

For further information on CMCC please see Annual Report 2015 ( and CMCC Strategic Plan ( SOCLIMPACT, Fondazione CMCC will mostly contribute to the definition of climate related indicators and to the production of climate change projections and impacts that will be performed in WP2 and WP3. Fondazione CMCC will contribute to the definition of climate change scenarios for 2050-2100 period, assessing the projected change in highly impacting events, such as intense storms, heat waves and drought. This assessment analysis will be done with a special attention devoted to mitigated scenarios (e.g. RCP2.6), using available MedCORDEX and EuroCORDEX simulations. Furthermore,

Fondazione CMCC will contribute to increasing the size of the multi-model ensemble of lowemission scenario (RCP2.6), producing climate change projections performed with its regional, high-resolution, atmosphere-ocean coupled model COSMOMed, composed by the limited area atmospheric model COSMO coupled with the ocean model NEMO-Med implemented in the Mediterranean region at very high resolution (1/16 deg). Furthermore, on the impacts side, Fondazione CMCC will provide an extensive and in depth assessment of the possible change in the wave climate.
